My wedding (an intimate affair at the Register Office) was attended by a group of Filipino friends. It occurred to me afterwards that none of them showered us with confetti or rice. I asked Rhyan if it was a custom in the Philippines to shower newlyweds with rice. He said it was. I asked why they did not do this to us. He said that in the Philippines, it represents the granting of prosperity, since rice is the staple of their diet there. But in the UK, our staple is potatoes, so if Filipinos followed the same custom, they would have had to shower us with potatoes. We both agreed that this may not have got us off to a good start.
